About Us

The Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova (FBRM) is the official leading biathlon forum in the Republic of Moldova. It was established on May 12, 1993 (date of registration at the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova: March 13, 1998). It has been affiliated with the International Biathlon Union (IBU) since 1993.

 

History

The development of biathlon in the Republic of Moldova began in 1992, when Valentin Ciumac and Petru Bria, with the support of
the first president of the National Olympic and Sports Committee of the Republic of Moldova (then called the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Moldova) Efim Josanu, started the formation of the team national in this kind of sport.

The national biathlon team of the Republic of Moldova was formed under the auspices of the Federation of Modern Pentathlon and Biathlon. Alexandr Odinokov - a coach from the Russian Federation became the head coach of the team (1992-1994). Athletes from the Voluntary Army, Air Force, and Fleet Assistance Society (formerly DOSAAF) were included in the team. The Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova was established on May 12, 1993, as a non-governmental organization - the official leading forum of biathlon in the Republic of Moldova.

  • At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer (Norway), the national biathlon team was represented by two athletes: Elena Gorohova and Vasile Gherghi (flag bearer). The first significant results Moldovan biathletes achieved in 1997 when Larisa Timchina won the gold medal at the European Summer Biathlon Championship and the bronze medal at the World Summer Biathlon Championship.

  • At the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano (Japan), the national biathlon team was presented by Elena Gorohova (who carried the Olympic torch) and Ion Bucșă (flag bearer).

  • In 2001 biathlete Valentina Ciurina (born in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation, citizen of the Republic of Moldova since November 2000) won the silver medal at the European Cup.

  • At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City (USA), the national biathlon team was represented by Valentina Ciurina and Mikhail Gribushenkov.

  • At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin (Italy), the national team was represented by four athletes: Natalia Levcencova (flag bearer), Valentina Ciurina, Elena Gorohova, and Mikhail Gribushenkov. According to the results of the Olympic Games, biathlete Natalia Levcencova took 8th place in the individual race over a distance of 15 km.

  • In 2008, Natalia Levcencova won the gold medal at the European Biathlon Championship in Nové Město in the women's individual 15 km race. In 2009, Natalia won the silver medal at the IBU Cup in Idre.

  • At the 2010 Winter Olympics|2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver (Canada) the national biathlon team was presented by Natalia Levcencova and Victor Pînzaru (flag bearer).

  • At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi (Russia), the national biathlon team was presented by Alexandra Camenscic.

  • In 2016, the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova became the organizer of the 12th Congress of the International Biathlon Union, which was attended by over 360 sports officials from 54 national federations - members of the IBU. As part of the promotion of biathlon in the Republic of Moldova, 36 athletes - current Olympic champions, and medalists of international competitions - also participated in the Congress.

  • Later, seven naturalized athletes joined the national biathlon team, who are still participating in competitions: Alla Ghilenko, Mihail Usov, Pavel Magazeev, Alina Stremous, Andrei Usov, Maxim Makarov and Aliona Ivanova.

  • In 2022 Alina Stremous won the gold medal in the pursuit race, the silver medal in the 15 km, and the 4th place in the 7.5 km sprint at the European Championship in Arber (Germany). Thus Alina Stremous became the most titled biathlete from the Republic of Moldova.

  • At the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing (China), the Moldovan team was represented by four athletes. The best result was Alina Stremous's 10th place in the 7.5 km sprint.

  • The Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova is an active member of the International Biathlon Union. FBRM is currently implementing a construction project for the first biathlon complex in the Republic of Moldova.

He was elected president of the Biathlon Federation of the Republic of Moldova in January 2021.
 

After being elected to office, he initiated a project to rebuild a biathlon track in the capital of Moldova, Chisinau. The value of the investment, according to preliminary estimates, is 3 million US dollars.
 

A year after Dmitri Torner became president of the Biathlon Federation of Moldova, Moldovan athletes have significantly improved their results. At the European Championships in Germany, biathlete Alina Stremous won a silver medal in the 15 km individual event and a gold medal in the pursuit race. Thanks to this fact, the Republic of Moldova occupied the third place in the ranking for medals of the European Championship.



The performances of the Moldovan biathletes in the IBU World Cup and the European Championship in the 2021/2022 season allowed them to qualify for the XXIV edition of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
